Meet Results | GameDay Preview

ST. PAUL, Minn. — For the second weekend in a row, the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota swimming and diving teams made the trip to St. Paul, Minn., Saturday afternoon—this time to take part in the Macalester Roger Ahlman Invitational.

And for the second week in a row, Cardinal coach Amber Bartholomew boarded the bus for the ride home with a smile on her face.

A very big smile.

Joe Tonda (St. Paul, Minn.)—who has been the Cardinal men's leader all season—was at it again Saturday, finishing in the top five in three individual events, while adding top-five efforts in a pair of relays as well in helping the Saint Mary's men to a fourth-place finish.

Kizzy Bell (St. Paul, Minn.) led the charge for the Saint Mary's women, winning the 100 breaststroke in helping the Cardinals to a fifth-place showing.

Tonda won the 400 IM, touching the wall in 4:41.82, while adding a second in the 200 IM (2:09.26) and a fourth in the 100 backstroke (1:00.47). Tonda also teamed with Mark Clayton, Lucas Gerads and Corey Piper (Winona, Minn.) to place fourth in the 200 medley relay (1:47.63), while hooking up with Clayton, Gerads and Nicholas Sawchuk (Rochester, Minn.) to add a fourth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:37.88).

Clayton posted a second-place time of 1:05.77 in the 100 breaststroke, while finishing right behind Tonda in the 200 IM, posting a third-place time of 2:17.67, and adding a second third-place effort in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:27.67.

Gerads chipped in fourths in the 100 and 200 butterfly (58.96 / 2:20.88), and added a fifth in the 400 IM (5:02.77), with Brian Mockler (Dubuque, Iowa) tallying a fourth in the 200 breaststroke (2:39.27) and a ninth in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.34), and Piper posting a time of 1:06.21 to finish 10th in the 100 butterfly.

On the women's side, Bell collected the Cardinals' lone first-place finish, touching the wall in 1:12.47 in the 100 breaststroke. The freshman added a fifth in the 200 breaststroke (2:43.23), with Reese Galewski (Winona, Minn.) chipping in a second in the 100 butterfly (1:05.31), a fourth in the 1000 freestyle (12:33.60), and an eighth in the 500 freestyle (5:58.04).

Christina Weldai (London, England) posted a pair of sixth-place efforts in the 50 freestyle (27.22) and the 200 freestyle (2:13.79), while Spencer Johnston (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and Caroline Hoffman (Chicago, Ill.) notched times of 2:53.79 and 2:54.76 to place seventh and eighth, respectively, in the 200 IM, and Zoe Schaetz (Winona, Minn.) notched a seventh in the 1000 freestyle (13:12.16).

Ailie Davidson (Duluth, Minn.) finished eight in the one-meter diving (161.65), while the women's 200 medley relay team of Weldai, Bell, Galewski, and Hoffman placed third with a time of 2:01.60, and the 200 freestyle relay team of Weldai, Hoffman, Galewski, and Schaetz placed fourth in 1:52.49.

The Cardinals return to action next Saturday, traveling to St. Peter, Minn., to take part in the Gustavus Grace Goblirsch Invitational.
