ST. PETER, Minn. — Heading into Saturday's Gustavus Grace Goblirsch Invitational, Saint Mary's University of Minnesota coach
Amber Bartholomew thought her Cardinals might be feeling the effects of their rigorous training regimen.
Add to that three meets in three weeks, and Bartholomew expected a bit of a letdown when Saint Mary's took to the pool Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals, however, had other ideas.
Grace VanBeest (Flossmoor, Ill.) and Reese Galewski (Winona, Minn.) combined to post four top-10 finishes in helping the Cardinal women to a seventh-place showing, while
Matt Clayton (Forest Lake, Minn.),
Joe Tonda, and
Lucas Gerads (St. Cloud, Minn.) equaled that—and then some—in pacing the Saint Mary's men's six-place team effort.
VanBeest led the way for the Cardinal women, placing fourth in the 200 breaststroke (2:40.12), while also adding an eighth in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.27) and a 12
th in the 200 IM (2:33.30). Galewski, meanwhile, notched a sixth in the 200 butterfly (2:32.86) and a seventh in the 100 butterfly (1:05.16).
On the men's side, Tonda posted the team's top individual finish with a third-place time of 4:42.83 in the 400 IM, while also adding a fourth in the 200 IM (2:08.39), and an 11
th in the 100 backstroke (59.69). Clayton chipped in a fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.75) and an eighth in the 200 breaststroke (2:29.51), with Gerads tallying an eighth in the 100 butterfly (58.08) and a 10
th in the 200 butterfly (2:17.38). Nick Sawchuk (Rochester, Minn.) added a 15th-place time of 2:08.05 in the 200 freestyle.
The Cardinals are now off until Dec. 2-3, when they head to the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center to take part in the two-day, Jean Freeman Invitational.
