11.21.16: The Week In Review—By The Numbers

WINONA, Minn. — It's Monday morning, and time to take one final look back at the highlights of the week that was—by the numbers.

0: The Saint Mary's women's hockey team did not allow a first-period goal in its two-game MIAC series against St. Olaf last weekend. The Cardinals have not allowed a goal in the game's opening 20 minutes all season.

1: Bailey Wendt (Coon Rapids, Minn.) scored her first collegiate goal in the Cardinal women's hockey team's 6-3 win over St. Olaf last Thursday.

1 = 17: Cole Kruger (Hayfield, Minn.), playing in his first game as a member of the Saint Mary's men's basketball team, scored a team-high 17 points in the Cardinals' season-opening 84-50 nonconference win over Martin Luther last Tuesday.

2 x 2: The Cardinal men's basketball team boasted two players—Wylie Ferron (Waconia, Minn.) and Quashingm Smith-Pugh (St. Paul, Minn.)—who posted double-doubles in their 84-50 season-opening win over Martin Luther last Tuesday. Ferron netted 14 points and added 11 rebounds, while Smith-Pugh chipped in 11 points and 11 boards.

2 = 3: Chad Cesarz (Jackson, Mich.) scored a pair of goals in the Saint Mary's men's hockey team's 4-3 win over St. Olaf last Friday, becoming the third Cardinal to post a multiple-goal game this season. Cesarz joins Jay Heinle (York, Pa.) and Kelvin Walz (Woodbury, Minn.), who each posted two-goal games against UW-River Falls on Nov. 5.

2 x 4: Anya Hafiz (Woodbury, Minn.) recorded her first collegiate two-goal game in the Saint Mary's women's hockey team's 6-3 win over St. Olaf last Thursday. Hafiz has now recorded multiple-point games in four of the Cardinals' first six contests this season.

3, 4: Joe Tonda (St. Paul, Minn.) posted the Cardinal men's swimming and diving team's top individual finishes at the Gustavus Grace Goblirsch Invitational last Saturday, posting a third-place time of 4:42.83 in the 400 IM, while also adding a fourth in the 200 IM (2:08.39), and an 11th in the 100 backstroke (59.69).

3, 6: Chad Cesarz (Jackson, Mich.) scored three goals in the Saint Mary's men's hockey team's sweep of St. Olaf last weekend—netting two in last Friday's 4-3 victory and another in the 3-0 win a day later. Cesarz has now scored seven goals in eight games against St. Olaf—the junior netted his first collegiate hat trick vs. the Oles in 2014-15, and added a goal and an assist last year.

4: With their 76-64 win over the University of Dubuque last Tuesday, the Cardinal women's basketball team has now won their season-opener in each of the last four seasons—dating back to a 63-58 loss to Elmhurst to kick off the 2011-12 season.

4, 5: With their 3-0 win over St. Olaf last Saturday, the Cardinal men's hockey team pushed its winning streak to five straight—including a perfect 4-0-0 in conference play. At 5-1-2, the Cardinals are off to their best start since going 6-1-1 to open the 2001-02 campaign—not to mention riding their first five-game winning streak since 2005-06. Saint Mary's perfect 4-0-0 record is the first time since the 1997-98 season that the Cardinals have opened MIAC play with four straight wins.

4, 8, 12: Grace VanBeest led the way for the Cardinal women's swimming and diving team at the Gustavus Grace Goblirsch Invitational last Saturday, placing fourth in the 200 breaststroke (2:40.12), while also adding an eighth in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.27) and a 12th in the 200 IM (2:33.30).

6: The Saint Mary's women's hockey team erupted for a season-high six goals in its 6-3 win over St. Olaf last Thursday. The six goals marked the highest single-game offensive output since scoring six against both Marian and Hamline during the 2009-2010 season.

9: The Saint Mary's men's and women's basketball teams combined to post nine players in double figures in the teams' season-opening wins last Tuesday. Sam Jones (White Bear Lake, Minn.) finished with a game-high 16 points, while Alexa Huisman (Adrian, Minn. / 13), Brandi Blattner (12), Brittney Flom (Kenyon, Minn. / 11), and Emma Schaefer (Roseville, Minn. / 10) also scored in double figures in the Cardinal women's 76-64 victory over the University of Dubuque. Cole Kruger (Hayfield, Minn. / 17), Wylie Ferron (Waconia, Minn. / 14), Quashingm Smith-Pugh (St. Paul, Minn. / 11), and Kevin Gleason (Bloomington, Minn. / 10), meanwhile, all netted 10 or more points in the Cardinal men's 84-50 victory over Martin Luther.

10: Anya Hafiz (Woodbury, Minn.) scored one of the Saint Mary's women's hockey team's three goals in last Saturday's 4-3 loss to St. Olaf—giving the Cardinal freshman at least one point in all six games this season. Hafiz leads the team in all three offensive categories—goals (6), assists (4), and points (10).

13-10: Brandi Blattner (Eyota, Minn.) collected her first double-double of the season in the Cardinal women's basketball team's 65-57 win over Martin Luther last Sunday, scoring 13 points and adding 10 rebounds. The sophomore recorded nine double-doubles a year ago.

16, 21: Sam Jones (White Bear Lake, Minn.) recorded a pair of career-best performances in two of the Cardinal women's basketball team's first three games this season. The senior equaled her career high with 16 points in Saint Mary's season-opening 76-64 win over the University of Dubuque last Tuesday, before surpassing that mark by five, pouring in a new career-high 21 points in the Cardinals' 65-57 win over Martin Luther five days later.

25: Ashley Corcoran (Red Wing, Minn.) made a season-high 25 saves in the Cardinal women's hockey team's 6-3 victory at St. Olaf last Thursday. The sophomore is now 1-0-1 in her last two starts, having also stopped 20 shots in the Cardinals' 2-2 tie against Bethel on Nov. 12.

25 = 0: Phil Heinle (York, Pa.) stopped all 25 shots he faced in the Cardinal men's hockey team's 3-0 win over St. Olaf last Saturday for his first shutout of the season—and fourth of his career.

32: Marah Shields (Mitford, Mich.) equaled her season high with 32 saves in the Saint Mary's women's hockey team's 4-3 loss to St. Olaf last Saturday. Shields also made 32 stops in Saint Mary's 5-4 win against St. Norbert on Oct. 29.

66 = 1: Jovan Newsum (Glendale Heights, Ill.), competing in his second NCAA Division III Cross Country National Championships turned in the fastest eight-kilometer performance of his career—and the fastest time in program history—crossing the finish line in 24:14.0 to place 66th out of the field of nearly 280 competitors last Saturday.
