Schaefer, Malone earn MIAC post-season honors

MIAC All-Conference Teams

WINONA, Minn. — Emma Schaefer (Roseville, Minn.) is no stranger to the post-season stage, earning Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors in each of her first three seasons with the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's soccer team.

Make that a perfect 4-for-4.

Schaefer—an honorable-mention all-conference selection as a freshman and a sophomore, and a first-team pick a year ago—picked up her second straight First-Team All-MIAC honor, the league office announced Thursday.

Schaefer was among 20 conference players named to the All-MIAC First-Team, while Cardinal teammate Ashlie Malone (Peyton, Colo.) joined 19 others as honorable-mention selections.

Schaefer, who appeared in all 17 games for the Cardinals—including starting all 11 conference contests—shared the team lead in goals with three, while adding a pair of assists for a team-high eight points during her final campaign in a Cardinal uniform.

Schaefer, who appeared in 70 games over her collegiate career—amassing 16 goals and seven assists for 39 career points—equaled her career-best with a six-point game against Martin Luther on Sept. 5, scoring twice and adding a pair of assists in a 7-2 Saint Mary's win.

Malone, meanwhile, made an instant impact in her first season as a Cardinal, starting 16 of the team's 17 games—including all 11 MIAC contests—while helping spearhead a Saint Mary's defense that boasted a 2.06 goals-against-average.

St. Thomas' Mallory DeBoom and Tarynn Thelig were named MIAC Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year, respectively, while Augsburg's Ashley St. Aubin was the conference's Rookie of the Year, and Bethel's Amanda Maxwell earned MIAC Coach of the Year honors.

As part of the conference-wide sportsmanship initiative, the MIAC also announced the 10th annual All-MIAC Sportsmanship team for women's soccer, which included Saint Mary's Carina Friend (Colorado Springs, Colo.).
