GENEVA, Ill. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's hockey team got a much-needed offensive jump-start Saturday afternoon, as the Cardinals erupted for a season-high seven goals in cruising to a 7-2 nonconference win over Aurora at the Fox Valley Ice Arena.
The Cardinals—who snapped a three-game losing streak with the nonconference win—got goals from seven different players, and scored more goals against the Spartans than they had in their previous three games.
Saint Mary's did not waste any time getting their offense shifted into high gear, as
Andrew Cummings (Anchorage, Alaska),
Chad Cesarz (Jackson, Mich.) and
Bob Kinne (St. Paul, Minn.) all found the back of the net in the game's first nine minutes to give the Cardinals a 3-0 advantage.
An advantage that quick ballooned to 5-0 with second-period goals by
Taylor Portner (Andover, Minn.) and
Nick Albergo (Elmhurst, Ill.).
Landon Farrell (Rochester, Minn.) made it 6-0 six minutes into the third period, before Aurora tallied back-to-back goals three minutes apart midway through the third to make it 6-2.
Jay Heinle (York, Pa.) closed out the scoring at 14:14, tallying his sixth of the season—and third in the last four games.
Aaron Davis (Mound, Minn.) made 21 saves in goal for the Cardinals, while a pair of Spartan goalies finished with a combined 23 saves.
The Cardinals (6-4-2 overall) will go for the sweep of the Spartans on Sunday, returning to Fox Valley Ice Arena for the 4 p.m. nonconference rematch.
