MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's hockey team pitched a shutout against 17 of Concordia's 18 players Friday evening in the teams' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
The 18
th Cobber, however, proved to be a real thorn in the Cardinals' side.
Concordia's Tori Davis scored the only goals of the game—one in the second and one in the third—as the Cobbers handed the Cardinals a 2-0 conference setback at the Moorhead Sports Center.
"I thought we played a solid game—but that was the problem, we played solid, but without any urgency," said Saint Mary's coach
Terry Mannor. "The two goals we gave up were breakaways that we got caught flat-footed on.
"We have to come out (Saturday) ready to compete for 60 minutes."
After a scoreless first period—the eighth time in eight games that the Cardinals have not allowed a first-period goal—Davis netted the first of her two unassisted tallies, beating Cardinal goalie
Marah Shields (Mitford, Mich.) at 16:06 of the second period.
Davis was at it again early in the third, again beating Shields on a breakaway just two minutes into the final period.
And two goals was more than enough for CC goalie Andrea Klug, who stopped all 25 Saint Mary's she faced in posting her second straight regular-season shutout against the Cardinals.
Shields, meanwhile, finished with 30 saves—including 11 in both the first and third periods.
The Cardinals (1-3-1 MIAC, 3-4-1 overall) will look for a conference split when the teams return to the Moorhead Sports Center for the second game of their conference series on Saturday. Opening face-off is slated for 2 p.m.
