MOORHEAD, Minn. — The third period was not kind to the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's hockey team in its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series against Concordia.
And neither was Cobber goalie Andrea Klug.
The Cobbers erupted for three third-period goals—and for the second straight game, Klug stopped everything the Cardinals threw at her—as Concordia completed its conference sweep with a 5-0 victory over Saint Mary's at the Moorhead Sports Center.
"We were not mentally strong in any way today," said Saint Mary's coach
Terry Mannor, whose team suffered a 2-0 setback to the Cobbers in Friday's opening game of their two-game conference series. "Physically, we worked hard, but all for nothing without working smart."
Ellen Rethwisch got the Cobbers on the board with her fifth goal of the season at 12:10 of the opening period—it was the first time in Saint Mary's nine games that the Cardinals surrendered a first-period goal.
Tori Davis pushed the CC lead to 2-0 midway through the second period, and Rethwisch, Mackenzie Lundeen, and Abbie Canton all found the back of the net in the third period to ice the Cobbers' victory.
Ashley Corcoran (Red Wing, Minn.) finished with 30 saves for the Cardinal—including 11 in both the second and third periods, while Klug stopped all 15 Saint Mary's shots en route to her second shutout in as many days against the Cardinals.
The Cardinals (1-4-1 MIAC, 3-5-1 overall) step out of conference play next weekend, traveling to Eau Claire, Wis., for a 7 p.m. matchup against UW-Eau Claire on Friday, before moving on to Stevens Point, Wis., for a 7 p.m. showdown with UW-Stevens Point the following day.
