Four Cardinals earn MIAC post-season honors

MIAC Women's Hockey Awards

WINONA, Minn. — Saint Mary's University of Minnesota's Macki Fadness (Eau Claire, Wis.) is no stranger when it comes to the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference post-season spotlight.

In more sports than one.

In early November, Fadness and Cardinal teammates Lex Krogstad and Molly Urban were named to the All-MIAC Volleyball First Team—the first time in her collegiate volleyball career that Fadness landed the conference's ultimate honor.

On Thursday, Fadness was back in the conference spotlight—this time for her hockey prowess—as the senior defenseman earned her fourth consecutive All-MIAC First-Team hockey honor, the league office announced.

And, just like on the MIAC volleyball stage, Fadness was not alone in the hockey spotlight Thursday, as McKenna Parent (Anoka, Minn.) and Jamie Henderson (Madison, Wis.) joined her on the All-MIAC First-Team, while Tori Herrmann (Elk River, Minn.) was an honorable-mention selection.

Fadness was lauded as one of the top shut-down defensemen in the MIAC in each of her first three seasons—and season No. 4 was no exception, as the Cardinal senior was again a mainstay in helping spearhead a Saint Mary's defensive corps that held its opponents to just 47 goals in 25 games. And when it came to providing offensive punch, Fadness did her fair share of that, too, scoring two goals and adding five assists for seven points—including five points (1 G, 4 A) in 18 conference games.

While Fadness was the curator of the Cardinals' air-tight defense, Parent and Henderson were a lethal 1-2 offensive punch for Cardinal coach Terry Mannor.

The Cardinal duo combined for 30 conference points in helping lead the Cardinals' to their second straight MIAC Playoff berth, with Parent compiling a team-best 16 points (9 G, 7 A), two points better than Henderson (9 G, 5 A).

Add in their seven nonconference games, and the numbers are equally as impressive, as Henderson heads into post-season play as the team-leader in goals (13) and points (20), while Parent led the team in assists (10) and was second to Henderson in both goals (9) and points (19).

Herrmann enjoyed a banner season between the pipes for the Cardinals, appearing in 14 of the team's 18 conference games, compiling a 1.37 goals-against-average—third among MIAC goalies—and owning a .952 save percentage. The senior, who put together a 1.45 GAA and .951 save percentage in 16 starts overall, enters post-season play having allowed just nine goals in the Cardinals' last eight games—including back-to-back-to-back Saturday shutouts against Gustavus, Saint Benedict and St. Catherine.

St. Thomas' Kathryn Larson was named MIAC Player of the Year, while Augsburg's Kayla Fuechtmann earned the Sheila Brown Award, and Bethel's Brian Carlson was tabbed MIAC Coach of the Year after leading the Royals to a share of the regular-season conference crown.

As part of the conference-wide sportsmanship initiative, the MIAC also announced the ninth annual All-MIAC Sportsmanship team for women's hockey, which included Saint Mary's Katie LeTourneau (White Bear Lake, Minn.)

The Cardinals (9-7-2 MIAC, 10-12-3 overall), who earned the final MIAC Playoff invitation on the final day of the regular season, head to Concordia on Thursday for a 4 p.m. MIAC Quarterfinal showdown against the Cobbers.
