And driving the Cardinals' high-octane offensive bus has been sophomore
Joe Seegers.
Seegers has proven to be opposing pitchers' worst nightmare through the season's first eight games, hitting an eye-popping .438 during the Cardinals' spring trip to Winter Haven, Fla.
And the Cardinals' efforts turned more than a few heads, as the shortstop was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Seegers, who collected 14 hits in 32 at-bats en route to his team-leading .438 batting average, also scored nine runs and drove in six. After being held off the base paths in the Cardinals' season-opening loss to Augustana, Seegers reached base safely in each of their last seven games last week—including a week-ending six-game hitting streak.
Seegers recorded two or more hits in five of the Cardinals' eight games last week—including three hits against Concordia, Houghton and Franklin. Seegers went 3-for-3 with three runs scored against Houghton last Saturday, and delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift Saint Mary's to a 4-3 win over Franklin a day later.
The Cardinals, who closed out their spring trip with a nonconference doubleheader against Mount Union on Monday, are back in action March 18-19, squaring off against Aurora, Wheaton (Ill.), and Cornell in Wheaton, Ill.
