FOND DU LAC, Wis. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's tennis team closed out its "Wisconsin Weekend" the same way it began—with an impressive nonconference victory.
The Cardinals, fueled by five singles wins, beat UW-Oshkosh for the first time in program history Sunday, dropping the Titans 7-2 at the YMCA Tennis Courts.
"Great way to end a solid weekend," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "Very happy with they way everyone performed."
The Cardinals jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the doubles matches, with
Warren Lawrenz (Rochester, Minn.) and
Alex Holm (Red Wing, Minn.) teaming for a 9-8 marathon win at No. 2, while
Brett Giesen (Cato, Wis.) and
Alex Zuzek (Hastings, Min.) added an 8-4 win at No. 3.
Saint Mary's then iced the win with victories in five of the six singles matches.
Collin Kaczorowski (Suamico, Wis.),
Brenden Amiotte (Rapid City, S.D.), and Giesen all posted straight-set wins at Nos. 1-3, while Lawrenz and Zuzek both rallied from a set down to win three-setters at No. 4 and No. 5.
The Cardinals (4-2 overall) are back in action on Feb. 20, when they play a pair matches at the Winona Tennis Center. Saint Mary's will square off against Gustavus in an MIAC match at noon, before facing Martin Luther at 3 p.m.
