GameDay PreviewWINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's tennis team took the court for the second time in less than 24 hours Saturday afternoon.
And, unfortunately for coach
Jeff Halberg, the end result was virtually identical.
After dropping a 9-0 decision to Saint John's Friday, the Cardinals stepped out of Minnesota Intercollegiate Conference play against Luther Saturday - and the Norse used a sweep of the six singles matches to beat Saint Mary's 8-1 at the Winona Tennis Center.
"I thought we played much better today than we did (against Saint John's)," said Halberg. "But give Luther credit - they are a talented team and played very well."
Brett Geisen (Cato, Wis.) and
Brenden Amiotte (Rapid City, S.D.) earned an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles, as the Cardinals trailed 2-1 after the three doubles matches, but the Norse rattled off six straight straight-set singles wins to lock up the 8-1 win.
The Cardinals (7-8 overall)
are off until next Sunday, traveling to Courts Plus in Fargo, N.D., for an 11:30 a.m. conference match against Concordia.
