GameDay PreviewWINONA, Minn. — When the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's tennis team squared off against Saint John's a year ago, the end result was a knock-down, drag-out, fight-to the-finish—with the Cardinals coming away with a hard-earned 5-4 victory.
And Friday evening, the two teams squared off again.
Unfortunately for coach
Jeff Halberg, the end result was not nearly as favorable.
The Johnnies raced out to a quick 3-0 lead and never took their foot off the gas, handing Saint Mary's a 9-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at the Winona Tennis Center.
"We lost to a very good Saint John's team tonight," Halberg said. "They are very talented and very deep from top to bottom."
The Johnnies picked up 8-2, 8-2, and 8-4 wins in the three doubles matches, and completed the sweep with six straight-set victories in singles action.
The Cardinals are right back in action on Saturday, stepping out of conference play for a 2 p.m. nonconference match against Luther. Saint Mary's was also scheduled to play North Central on Saturday, but that match has been postponed to a later date.
