GameDay PreviewMINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — A year ago, St. Catherine had little trouble getting past the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's tennis team, rolling to a 9-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory.
Friday evening, the two teams were back on the court, and, unfortunately for the Cardinals, the only similarity to last year was the end result, as the Wildcats handed Saint Mary's a heartbreaking, 5-4 setback at the U of M Baseline Tennis Center.
"We lost an absolute nailbiter tonight," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "We lost to St. Catherine 9-0 a year ago, so tonight's outcome was a tremendous improvement. I could not be prouder of these ladies."
The Cardinals grabbed the upper hand after doubles play, as
Megan Vandenberg (De Pere, Wis.) and
Julia Boeve (St. James, Minn.), and
Haley Jorgensen (Fallon, Nev.) and Marissa Kinzer (Aitkin, Minn.) teamed for identical 8-5 wins to give Saint Mary's a 2-1 lead.
The Wildcats had the advantage in singles play, winning four of the six singles matches for to earn the win. Vandenberg and Boeve picked up straight-set singles wins for the Cardinals, while Jorgensen suffered a heartbreaking 2-6, 6-1, 13-11 loss at No. 5.
The Cardinals (1-3 MIAC, 6-4 overall) are back in action on Sunday, traveling to Courts Plus in Fargo, N.D., for an MIAC match against Concordia.
