Cardinals come up short in 5-4 loss to Cobbers

Match Summary | GameDay Preview

FARGO, N.D. — Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's tennis coach Jeff Halberg would have loved to have seen his Cardinals come away with a victory in their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match against Concordia Sunday afternoon.

But the Cardinal head coach certainly couldn't fault his team's effort.

In a match that truly could have gone either way, the Cobbers won two of the three singles matches that went the maximum three sets and held off the Cardinals, 5-4, at Courts Plus.

"This was an amazing match from the first ball to the last," said Halberg. "Both teams wanted to win desperately, and they fought like tigers to win.

"You have to tip you hat to Concordia for getting it done in the end, but I have nothing but pride for my players' efforts today."

Concordia picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, while the Cardinal duo of Brett Giesen (Cato, Wis.) and Brenden Amiotte (Rapid City, S.D.) collected an 8-1 win at No. 3, to cut the Cobber lead to 2-1 after the doubles portion of the match.

Blake Olmscheid (Farmington, Minn.) and Alex Holm (Red Wing, Minn.) picked up straight-set wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles for the Cardinals, while Warren Lawrenz (Rochester, Minn.) rallied from a set down to earn a 4-6, 7-5, 12-10 marathon at No. 4.

Collin Kaczorowski (Suamico, Wis.) and Amiotte weren't as fortunate, as Kaczorowski dropped a 6-3, 4-6, 10-6 decision at No. 1 singles, while Amiotte suffered a 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 decision at No. 2.

The Cardinals (0-5 MIAC, 7-9 overall) are now off until April 2, when they return home to the Winona Tennis Center for a 2 p.m. conference showdown with Bethel.
