Jeff Halberg knew his Cardinal squads were in for a still challenge when they squared off against St. Thomas Saturday afternoon.
How right he was.
Despite their best efforts, the Cardinals could not match the Tommie firepower, as UST handed both Saint Mary's squads 9-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setbacks at the Winona Tennis Center.
"We battled hard today," Halberg said. "But St. Thomas was just so tough, top-to-bottom."
The Tommie women handed Saint Mary's 8-3, 8-5, and 8-1 setbacks in the doubles portion, while also adding five straight-set wins in singles play. Laura Sonday (St. James, Minn.) lost a heartbreaker at No. 1 singles, falling to the Tommies' Bridget Noack, 6-3, 4-6, 10-8.
The Tommie men opened with 8-4, 8-3, and 8-6 wins in the three doubles matches, before completing the sweep with six straight-set singles wins.
The Cardinal men are back in action next weekend with four home matches, hosting Saint John's in a 7 p.m. match on Friday, before entertaining Luther (2 p.m.) and North Central (6 p.m.) on Saturday, and Milwaukee School of Engineering (noon) on Sunday.
The Saint Mary's women, meanwhile, are off until March 18, when they head to the U of M Baseline Tennis Center for an MIAC match against St. Catherine.
