ROCHESTER, Minn. — After scoring a combined 19 runs in their first two wins of the Luther Tournament on Friday, the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota fastpitch softball team was "limited" to just six runs against Martin Luther Saturday morning.
Fortunately for coach
Jen Miller, six runs were more than enough.
The Cardinals'
Abbey Killian (Fountain City, Wis.) tossed a complete-game seven hitter, and Saint Mary's took advantage of a four-run third inning in posting its third straight victory, a 6-2 win over the Knights at the Rochester Dome.
After spotting Martin Luther a 1-0 lead in the Knights' first at-bat, the Cardinals rattled off six unanswered runs—two in the first and four more in the third—to take the lead for good.
The Cardinals got a pair of RBI groundouts to account for their two, first-inning, while
Tessa Kuschke (Grant, Minn.) and
Stanzy Snyder (Johnston, Iowa) both delivered two-run singles in Saint Mary's four-run third.
Martin Luther would score its second run in the top of the fifth, but that was as close as the Knights would get, as the Cardinals locked up win No. 11 on the season.
Snyder went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs to lead the Cardinal offensive attack, while Kuschke was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Saint Mary's other six hits came from six different players.
Killian, meanwhile, collected her third win of the season—and her third complete game—scattering seven hits over seven shutout innings. The sophomore did not walk a batter and finished with five strikeouts.
The Cardinals (11-2 overall) close out the Luther Tournament later in the day on Saturday, squaring off against Millikin.
