ST. PAUL, Minn. — With two matches remaining in the regular season, and the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's tennis team clinging to an outside shot at reaching the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Playoffs, coach
Jeff Halberg knew how important Saturday's match against Hamline was.
And so did the Cardinals.
Saint Mary's put together a new-perfect performance in less-than-perfect conditions en route to an 8-1 victory over the Pipers at HU's Holt Courts.
"The ladies played awesome in very windy conditions," said Halberg. "This was a great conference win—and a total team effort."
The Cardinals certainly got off to an impressive start, dropping just seven games in sweeping through the doubles portion of the conference match.
Laura Sonday (West St. Paul, Minn.)/Kirsten Hoffman (Apple Valley, Minn.) collected an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles, while
Megan Vandenberg (De Pere, Wis.)/
Julia Boeve (St. James, Minn.) and
Haley Jorgensen (Fallon, Nev.)/
Marissa Kinzer (Aitkin, Minn.) added 8-3 wins at Nos. 2 and 3.
Sonday, Hoffman, Boeve, and Jorgensen all added straight-set singles wins, while Vandenberg outlasted HU's Maddie Muntka, 6-2, 4-6, 10-4 at No. 3.
The Cardinals (3-6 MIAC, 12-7 overall) close out their regular-season schedule on Sunday, hosting Macalester in a noon match at the Winona Tennis Center.
