GameDay PreviewWINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's tennis team fell behind early in its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match against Bethel Saturday afternoon.
And against a high-powered squad like the Royals, that was not what coach
Jeff Halberg was hoping for.
Fueled by a 3-0 sweep through the doubles portion of their conference match, the Royals tacked on wins in five of the six singles matches in handing the Cardinal an 8-1 setback at the Winona Tennis Center.
"We ran into a tough Bethel team today," Halberg said. "We hung right with them, but they played just a bit better than we did and deserved the win.
"I was proud of our effort," added Halberg. "We just fell behind early—and you can't afford to do that against a team as talented as Bethel is."
The Royals picked up a pair of 8-6 wins at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles, while adding an 8-3 win at No. 3 to grab the early, 3-0 lead.
Megan Vandenberg (De Pere, Wis.) collected the Cardinals' lone singles victory, beating BU's Ann Browning 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3.
The Cardinals (2-4 MIAC, 7-5 overall) are right back in action on Sunday, heading to Green Bay, Wis., for nonconference matches against St. Norbert (10 a.m.) and UW-Stevens Point (1 p.m.).
