NCBWA Hitter of Week Release
WINONA, Minn. —
Willie Doll (Amherst, Wis.) batted .733 in the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota baseball team's two Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheaders last week.
And when it comes to Player of the Week honors, the senior is batting 1.000.
Doll added yet another national accolade on Thursday, as the outfielder—already named the MIAC Athlete of the Week and to the D3baseball.com Team of the Week—was selected the National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association (NCBWA) Division III Hitter of the Week
Doll was a pitcher's worst nightmare last week, hitting an eye-popping .733—11-for-15—with a double, two triples, a pair of home runs, five RBIs, 10 runs scored, and a perfect 6-for-6 effort in the stolen base department.
Doll kicked off his week by going 4-for-5 with a run scored in the Cardinals' heartbreaking 6-5 nine-inning loss to Augsburg on April 21. In Game 2, Doll continued to feast on Auggie pitching, blasting a pair of home runs in three at-bats—including a two-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Cardinals to a 7-5 victory. The walk-off home run against Augsburg marked the second time this season the senior has belted a game-winning home run in their last at-bat—Doll hit a three-run, game-winner against St. Olaf on April 16.
Doll added his second four-hit performance of the week in Game 1 against Macalester last Saturday, going 4-for-4—with a single, double, and triple—while also scoring four runs, driving in two, and stealing a pair of bases in Saint Mary's 13-7 victory. In Game 2, Doll went 1-for-3—the lone hit his second triple of the afternoon—with a pair of runs scored in the Cardinals' 6-4 victory.
Doll—who picked up right where he left off with a 5-for-7, four-run showing in Saint Mary's sweep of Carleton on Tuesday—boasts a team-leading batting average to .447, while also leading the Cardinals in at-bats (132), hits (59), total bases (83), slugging percentage (.629), and stolen bases (21). His four-hit efforts against Augsburg and Macalester were the second and third times this season he has recorded four hits in a game, while his four runs scored vs. Macalester—and again against Carleton—equaled his collegiate best.
Doll and the Cardinals are back in action on Wednesday, traveling to Moorhead, Minn., for a 2:30 p.m. conference doubleheader against Concordia.
