Niels Anderson could sum up his Cardinals' performance in their outdoor season-opener in one word: "Wow."
Saint Mary's collected seven first-place finishes—including two by
James Davis—as the Cardinals kicked off their outdoor season at the non-team-scored Dingels/Brueggen Open Sunday at the Saint Mary's Track Complex.
Davis led the charge for the Cardinal men, winning both the 100 (11.09) and 200 (22.56), while
Morris Dennis chipped in a first in the 400 (2:00.36),
Jovan Newsum and
Joe Gardner added firsts in the 1,500 (4:10.83) and 110 hurdles (16.48), respectively, and
Bryan Ortman added a first in the long jump (6.39m) and a second in the triple jump (12.48m).
And the Cardinal men were just getting warmed up.
Brandon Krogman and
Luis Avila recorded second-place efforts in the 400 (2:02.53) and long jump (6.08m), respectively, with
Connor Nicholas adding a third in the hammer (21.10m), and
Phil Emmerich posting fourth-place showings in the 110 hurdles (16.96), 400 hurdles (1:00.31), and long jump (5.60m).
Ross Kinderman, Trent Villano, and
Gordy Paulman also recorded top-five finishes for the Cardinals, as Kinderman finished fourth in the javelin (43.12m), and Villano (hammer, 21.10m) and Paulman (pole vault, 3.65m) each added fifths.
Maria Missurelli and Becca Dup highlighted the Saint Mary's women's effort, as Missurelli won the pole vault (3.05m), and Dup posted second-place showings in the 100 (12.88) and long jump (4.94m).
Kynzie Smedsrud had a busy day, placing third in the 100 hurdles (17.01) and fourth in the 200 (29.44), while Claire Siska tallied a third in the 400 hurdles (1:12.65), Madaline Eichers posted a third in the hammer (41.08) and fifth in the discus (29.42), and Alicia Berkenes and Allie Theil finished fourth and fifth in the 1,500 with times of 5:24.51 and 5:28.03, respectively.
The Cardinals are back on the track next Saturday, as Saint Mary's travels to La Crosse, Wis., to take part in the UW-La Crosse Ashton May Invitational.
