Cardinals roll to wins over St. Norbert, UW-SP

SNC Summary | UWSP Summary | GameDay Preview

GREEN BAY, Wis. — After falling to Bethel 8-1 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match on Saturday, Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's tennis coach Jeff Halberg knew the secret for the Cardinals in their nonconference matches against UW-Stevens Point and St. Norbert was getting of to a quick start.

And the Cardinals did just that in their opening match against UW-Stevens Point, winning two of the three doubles matches en route to an 8-1 nonconference victory.

It was more of the same in the Cardinals' second match of the day, as Saint Mary's won two of three doubles matches and collected wins in five of the six singles matches—including a three-set marathon by Kirsten Hoffman (Apple Valley, Minn.) at No. 2—in beating St. Norbert 7-2.

"It was a great day," said Halberg. "We got the day off to a great start with a solid win over UW-Stevens Point, and came back and played very well again against St. Norbert.

"Top-to-bottom, it was a total team effort all day."

Fueled by that 2-1 lead after the doubles portion of their match against UW-Stevens Point, the Cardinals rattled off six straight-set singles wins in earning the victory.

Laura Sonday (West St. Paul, Minn.), Hoffman, Megan Vandenberg (De Pere, Wis.), Julia Boeve (St. James, Minn.), Haley Jorgensen (Fallon, Nev.), and Sheyenne Bauer (Cannon Falls, Minn.) dropped a combined 15 games in rolling to their six singles wins, while Sonday-Hoffman and Vandenberg-Boeve chipped in 8-3 and 8-1 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, respectively.

Vandenberg-Boeve completed their perfect 2-0 day at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, while Jorgensen and Marissa Kinzer (Aitken, Minn.) chipped in a 9-7 win at No. 3 to give the Cardinals the early 2-1 lead.

Vandenberg, Boeve, Jorgensen, and Bauer all recorded straight-set singles wins, while Hoffman added a come-from-behind, 5-7, 7-5, 10-5 win at No. 2 to complete the win.

The Cardinals (9-5 overall) return to action on Wednesday, traveling to River Falls, Wis., for their final nonconference match of the season, a 4 p.m. showdown against UW-River Falls.
