WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota closed out its nonconference schedule in impressive fashion Thursday evening, as the Cardinals dropped just 15 games in rolling to a 9-0 win over North Central (Minn.) at the Winona Tennis Center.
"The guys played really well tonight," understated coach
Jeff Halberg, whose team snapped a season-high six-match losing streak with the win. "Everyone in the lineup turned in a top-notch effort—it was a great way to get back to our winning ways."
The Cardinals certainly got off on the right foot against the Rams, as
Warren Lawrenz (Rochester, Minn.)/
Alex Holm (Red Wing, Minn.) and
Blake Olmscheid (Farmington, Minn.)/
Alex Zuzek (Hastings, Minn.) posted back-to-back 8-2 doubles wins at No. 1 and No. 2, while
Garen Merritt (Sioux City, Iowa)/
Kyle Swanson (Oak Grove, Minn.) added an 8-0 shutout at No. 3 to give Saint Mary's an early 3-0 lead.
And it was more of the same in singles, as
Collin Kaczorowski (Suamico, Wis.),
Brenden Amiotte (Rapid City, S.D.),
Brett Giesen (Cato, Wis.), Merritt, Zuzek, and Swanson all recorded straight-set wins—losing just 11 games combined.
The Cardinals (8-10 overall) return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play are back in action Saturday, traveling to Northfield, Minn., for a 2 p.m. conference match against St. Olaf.
