St. Olaf deals Cardinals 8-1 conference setback

Match Summary | GameDay Preview

OWATONNA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's tennis team got off to a solid start in its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match against St. Olaf.

Unfortunately, there was not enough gas left in the Cardinals' tank, as St. Olaf pulled away in the singles portion of the match to hand Saint Mary's an 8-1 setback at the Owatonna Tennis Center.

"We started well, but faded—we just kind of lost all our momentum after doubles play," said Saint Mary's coach Jeff Halberg. "But give kudos to St. Olaf—they played a solid match and proved to be the better team on this day."

Warren Lawrenz (Rochester, Minn.) and Alex Holm (Red Wing, Minn.) teamed for an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles, cutting the St. Olaf lead to 2-1 after the three doubles matches.

The Oles, however, took control in singles play, winning all six matches—including five in straight sets. The Cardinals' Blake Olmscheid (Farmington, Minn.) forced a third set in his No. 5 singles match against St. Olaf's Danny Hogan, rallying from an opening 6-1 loss with a 6-2 victory in the second set. Hogan then sealed the Oles' sixth singles win with a 10-4 victory in the third set.

The Cardinals (0-7 MIAC, 8-11 overall) are now off until next Saturday, when they hit the road for the final time this season, traveling to St. Paul, Minn., for a 3 p.m. Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference road match against Hamline.
