FOND DU LAC, Wis. — It took more than 99 minutes, but for the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's soccer team, it was worth the wait.
The Cardinals took advantage of a Marian miscue with less than a minute remaining in overtime, as Saint Mary's collected a 1-0 nonconference win over Marian Saturday afternoon.
"It was a true team win today," said Saint Mary's coach
Pete Watkins. "The guys dug in and adapted to the situation.
Nate Levy (Byron, Minn.) had some clutch saves at key times to keep the game scoreless.
"Marian is very well-coached and forced us to make some tactical adjustments."
The game's only goal came in the 99
th minute, as a Cardinal throw-in deflected off a Sabre player and into the Marian net for an own goal—and a Saint Mary's victory.
The Cardinals had the upper hand in the game's opening 45 minutes, putting three shots on the Sabre goal, while Levy did not face a first-half shot. Marian turned the tables in the second half, with Levy being forced to make three saves, while the Sabres' Schultz did not face a shot.
The Cardinals (3-1-0 overall)—winners of two straight—are back in action on Sunday, traveling to Mequon, Wis., for a 1 p.m. nonconference game against Concordia (Wis.)
