LAKE CITY, Minn. — After watching teammate
Kaitlin Kling (LeRoy, Minn.) put together her two best collegiate rounds earlier this season,
Madison Gately (Glenview, Ill.) decided to get into the season-best act during the opening round of the D3 Classic.
The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota senior shot her career-best round Saturday at the Jewel Golf Course, carding a 10-over-par 82 to help the Cardinals to a 371 team total and a 16
th-place team finish after the opening round of the 36-hole event, hosted by Carleton.
Kling was also busy putting together career best-type numbers on Saturday, shooting the Cardinals' best round of the afternoon—an eight-over 80 that equaled the third-best 18-hole score of her collegiate career.
St. Thomas is the first-round team leader, shooting an opening-day 304, seven shots in front of host Carleton. Grinnell and St. Catherine carded identical 319s, and Bethel rounded out the top five with a 320.
Alyssa Alyema of Carleton and Grinnell's Vdushi Sirha shared individual medalist honors, shooting even-par 72s.
Along with Kling's 80 and Gately's 82, the Cardinals also got a 99 from
Ana Reding (Stillwater, Minn.), a 110 from
Annika Blesener (North St. Paul, Minn.), and a 116 from
Michaela Heuckendorf (Plymouth, Minn.).
The tournament concludes on Sunday with another 18 holes at The Jewel.
