SUPERIOR, Wis. — For the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's soccer team, it was only a matter of time Sunday afternoon.
It took the Cardinals 45 minutes to get their offense warmed up in their nonconference game against UW-Superior, but once they did, there was no stopping them.
The Cardinals, who went into the halftime break deadlocked with the Yellowjackets 0-0, erupted for four second-half goals—from four different players—en route to a 4-0 victory.
Emily Loof (Colorado Springs, Colo.) got the Cardinals on the board in the 62
nd minute, breaking past the Yellowjacket defense and lacing a shot past UW-Superior goalkeeper Bailey Henderson.
And once the Cardinals offense got on the board, there was no slowing it down.
Five minutes after Loof's breakaway tally,
Abby Lafko (Gilbert, Ariz.) headed in a
Shelly Wing (Verona, Wis.) corner kick to push the Saint Mary's advantage to 2-0.
And the Cardinals weren't finished—far from it.
Hailey Cottle (Orting, Wash.) got into the action with her second goal of the season in the 76
th minute, and 10 minutes later,
Bridgett Leverich (Oswego, Ill.) rounded out the scoring with her second of the game to make it a 4-0 final.
Gabriella Pederson (Chaska, Minn.) stopped the lone UW-Superior shot she faced for her second shutout of the season, while Henderson made 14 saves in goal for the Yellowjackets.
The Cardinals (2-3-1 overall) are back in action on Wednesday, when they return to Ochrymowcyz Field for a 7 p.m. nonconference game against UW-River Falls.
