ST. PETER, Minn. — Talk about kicking off your collegiate career with a bang.
Saint Mary's University of Minnesota freshman Cassandra Barr (Eau Claire, Wis.) completed a perfect 4-0 run through the second draw at the Gustavus Fall Invitational Saturday, beating St. Norbert's Meg Witt 8-2 in the title match.
Barr had opened the tournament with an 8-6 win over Michaela Wagner of Concordia (Wis.), a 6-2, 6-0 victory against Concordia's Kendra Stoick, and a come-from-behind 8-4 triumph over UW-Eau Claire's Hannah Koch on Friday.
And the winning continued for Barr in doubles play, as she teamed with
Haley Jorgensen (Fallon, Nev.) for an 8-0 victory over Concordia's Breann Adamek/Megan Smith in their opening-round match. Their doubles run came to a screeching halt in the second round, as Cornell's Racquel Ruiz/Gabby Ferro handed the Cardinal pair an 8-5 setback.
Sheyenne Bauer (Cannon Falls, Minn.) continued her singles run through the consolation bracket in the fourth draw, beating Beca Spiegelhoff of Concordia (Wis.), before falling 8-4 to UW-La Crosse's Shira Busch.
Bauer then teamed with
Summer Lardy (Richmond, Minn.) to posted an opening-round 8-3 win over St. Olaf's Sophie Breen/Shelby Arendt. The duo weren't as fortunate in the second round, falling to UW-La Crosse's Kim Drangeis/Shira Busch 8-3.
Marissa Kinzer (Aitkin, Min.) and
Ashley Syed (Lewisville, Texas), meanwhile, suffered an 8-3 loss to Kellis Brandt/Ellie Bergstrand to close out the tournament for the Cardinals.
In USTA-ITA action Saturday,
Laura Sonday (West St. Paul, Minn.) and
Megan Vandenberg (De Pere, Wis.)—who teamed up for an 8-1 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan's Bridget McGeegan and Torey Kogel in Friday's opening round of the doubles competition—had their tournament ended with an 8-4 loss to St. Olaf's Margaret Zimmerman/Erin McDonald.
The Cardinals kick off their 2017 spring season on Jan. 27, hosting Martin Luther in a 5:30 p.m. nonconference match at the Winona Tennis Center. Saint Mary's opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play two days later, entertaining Carleton in a 11 a.m. contest, also at the Winona Tennis Center.
