SARTELL, Minn. —
Kaitlin Kling (LeRoy, Minn.) could not have picked a better way to kick off the 2016 women's golf season, as the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota junior carded a five-over-par 77 in leading the way for the Cardinals during the first day of the Saint Benedict Invitational.

Greg Moore. "It was an outstanding performance by Kaitlin."
Just how outstanding?
Kling's career-best effort was just three shots shy of the school record, and the lowest round recorded by a Cardinal since Andrea Hanke carded a two-over 74 at the Luther Invitational in 2004.
Kling is currently sitting in third place after the opening day of the 36-hole tournament, played at Blackberry Ridge Golf Course, just three shots back of Day 1 leader Ziyi Wang of Carleton, who posted a two-over 74. Ayumi Sakamoto of Carleton is sitting in second following a 75, Kling, Natalie Amundson (78), of Saint Benedict, Bethel's Abby Perrenoud (78), and St. Thomas' Marja Sorensen (78) round out the top six.
Carleton shot an opening-round 309 to lead St. Thomas by 13 shots, with Bethel (328), Saint Benedict (332), and St. Catherine (333) completing the top five. Saint Mary' sis sitting in 10
th after shooting an opening-round 373.
Along with Kling's performance, the Cardinals also got a 97 from Ana Eding, a 99 from
Madison Gately, a 100 from
Tiarra Thompson, and a 106 from
Grace Gillis.
