Doll, Fadness, Loof, Giesen land honors

WINONA, Minn. — Macki Fadness (Eau Claire, Wis.) and Willie Doll (Amherst, Wis.) have been no strangers to the awards stage. In fact, over the last four years, the duo has combined for 16 post-season awards—including seven First-Team All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors.

Yet, as good as they were in their first three seasons in a Saint Mary's uniform, both Fadness and Doll were at their best in their final year as Cardinals.

And it did not go unnoticed, as the pair were named Saint Mary's University of Minnesota's Outstanding Male and Female Athletes during Friday's Cardinal 'M' Club Sports Hall of Fame and Awards Ceremony.

Emily Loof (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Brett Giesen (Cato, Wis.), meanwhile, were named Saint Mary's Outstanding Male and Female Scholar Athletes.

Friday's festivities also included the induction of three new members into the Saint Mary's Sports Hall of Fame, as the Cardinal 'M' Club, in association with the Saint Mary's Alumni Office, welcomed the Class of 2016—Chuck Richards '71 (baseball), Julie (Macko) Lentz '91 (women's soccer), and Katie (Meissner) Oberfoell '92 (women's soccer).

A two-sport standout, Fadness made her presence felt both on the volleyball court and the hockey rink—collecting All-MIAC First-Team honors in each sport, while also helping both Cardinal squads qualify for post-season play. A four-time first-team all-conference pick in hockey, Fadness finished with two goals and five assists, while helping spearhead a defense that allowed just 47 goals in 25 games. On the volleyball court, Fadness was equally as dominant, amassing a team-leading and career-high 334 kills—including a career high 18 kills three times—while hitting .280 in helping the Cardinals reach the MIAC post-season for a third straight year.

A mainstay for Saint Mary's during his four-year collegiate baseball career, Doll enjoyed a season to remember—not to mention one for the record books—in 2016, as he helped Saint Mary's reach the title game in the MIAC Playoffs. The Cardinal outfielder hauled in six post-season honors, including D3baseball.com Third-Team All-American. The MIAC's Max Molock MVP and a First-Team All-MIAC selection for the third time in four years—not to mention a First-Team ABCA and D3baseball.com All-Midwest Region pick—Doll led the team in virtually every offensive category, including batting average, at-bats, run, hits, on-base percentage and stolen bases. An unprecedented four-time MIAC All-Defensive Team selection and a CoSIDA Academic All-District 6 honoree, Doll played in all 156 games during his four-year collegiate career—including 155 starts—and closed out his illustrious four-year playing career as the Cardinals' all-time leader in games played, at-bats, runs, hits, doubles, total bases, and stolen bases.

A Literature/Public Relations major with a 3.98 grade-point-average, Loof has been a mainstay on the Saint Mary's women's soccer team. She appeared in 17 games for the Cardinals in 2015, scoring one goal and adding three assists for five points. An honorable-mention All-MIAC selection in 2014, Loof earned Academic All-MIAC honors a year ago.

A Psychology major with a 3.92 GPA, Giesen enjoyed a stellar sophomore campaign as a member of the Saint Mary's men's tennis team in 2015. Giesen—who closed out the 2016 campaign with a team- and career-high 10 singles wins, while also collecting 10 wins in doubles play—earned Academic All-MIAC and ITA Scholar-Athlete honors a year ago.
