WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota track and field teams kicked off their indoor season in impressive fashion Saturday afternoon, as the Cardinal men recorded 15 top-five finishes, and the Cardinal women added seven at the Saint Mary's Early Birdinal at the Gostomski Fieldhouse.
Jovan Newsum—coming off a national championship appearance during the cross country season—led a 1-2-3 Saint Mary's finish in the mile, blowing away the rest of the field with a time of 4:29.54.
Sherman Moga placed a distance second in 4:41.16, and
Ben Borash was third in 4:50.86.
Along with Newsum's showing, the Cardinal men also got first-place efforts from Ty Rommey in the 600 (1:38.92), and
Andrew Allemann in the 200 (24.37).
Brandon Krogman chipped in a second in the 1,000 (2:40.60), with
Jacob Hagen-Erickson (long jump, 5.91 meters),
Dean Marlin (triple jump, 11.83 meters),
Tyler Amy (shot put, 11.39 meters) and
Connor Nicholas (weight throw, 11.99 meters) also recording second-place performances.
Other top performances from the Cardinal men included: Amy (3
rd, weight throw, 10.03 meters), Marlin (3
rd, long jump, 5.69 meters),
Ryan Buchmeier (3
rd, triple jump, 10.76 meters), Allemann (4th, 55, 6.94), and
Shawn Pruitt (4
th, 200, 25.16)
Becca Dup and Molly Sweet each picked up a pair of top-five finishes to pace the Cardinal women. Dup clocked a time 7.86 to place third in the 55, while adding a leap of 5.39 meters in placing fifth in the long jump. Sweet, meanwhile, notched the Cardinal women's top place finish, grabbing second in the mile (5:38.93), while adding a fifth in the 1,000 (3:21.99).
Other top performance from the Saint Mary's women included: Alyssa Thiel (3
rd, 3,000, 12:17.55), Danielle Franke (3
rd, mile, 5:41.74), Portia Mensah (5
th, 55, 8.00), Maddie Bollig (6
th, mile, 6:32.60), and Molly Abraham (9
th, 400, 1:07.42).
The Cardinals are back on the track next Saturday, as Saint Mary's travels to Menomonie, Wis., to take part in the UW-Stout Warren Bowlus Invitational.
