WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's and women's tennis teams kicked off the 2017 season in convincing fashion Friday evening.
Check that … the Cardinals kicked off the 2017 season in very convincing fashion—picking up a pair of 9-0 nonconference wins over Martin Luther at the Winona Tennis Center.
"That was a great way to start the season for both teams," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "We talked about focus and effort right from the first ball—and everyone executed as planned."
The Cardinal men dropped just nine games in cruising to six, straight-set singles wins, while winning all three doubles matches by 8-4 counts.
Brenden Amiotte (Rapid City, S.D.), Bobby Tiedeman (Euclid, Minn.),
Alex Zuzek (Hastings, Minn.),
Robbie Sobczak (Cloquet, Minn.),
Jake Allen (Winona, Minn.), and
Kyle Swanson (Oak Grove, Minn.) were singles winners, with Amiotte/
Alex Holm (Red Wing, Minn.), Tiedeman/
Andrew Johnson (Rochester, Minn.), and Zuzek/Sobczak teamed up for the three doubles wins.
The Cardinal women also dominated from start-to-finish opening with 8-0, 8-3, and 8-4 doubles wins, before sweeping the six singles matches in straight sets.
Laura Sonday (West St. Paul, Minn.), Megan Vandenberg (De Pere, Wis.), Julia Boeve (St. James, Minn.), Haley Jorgenson (Fallon, Nev.), Cassandra Barr (Eau Claire, Wis.), and Sheyenne Bauer (Cannon Falls, Minn.) accounted for the Cardinals' six singles wins, with Sonday/Vandenberg, Jorgensen/Marissa Kinzer (Aitkin, Minn.), and Ashley Syed (Lewisville, Texas/Summer Lardy (Richmond, Minn.) teaming up for doubles victories.
The Cardinal men kick off Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday, hosting Carleton in a 3 p.m. match, while the Saint Mary's women will entertain Carleton on Sunday at 11 a.m. Both matches will be held at the Winona Tennis Center.
