WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's tennis team took the court for the second time this season Sunday afternoon.
Unfortunately for coach
Jeff Halberg, the Cardinals could not put together a repeat performance of their season-opener on Friday.
Saint Mary's, coming off a 9-0 nonconference win over Martin Luther, had no answers for the depth of Carleton Sunday morning, as the high-powered Knights dealt the Cardinals a 9-0 setback in the teams' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener at the Winona Tennis Center.
"We started OK in doubles—our No. 2 team played exceptionally well—but we just couldn't match the strength and depth of Carleton in singles," Halberg said. "They are a very talented foe."
Julia Boeve (St. James, Minn.) and
Cassandra Barr (Eau Claire, Wis.) put together the Cardinals' best performance of the day, dropping a 9-7 marathon at No. 2 doubles.
Laura Sonday (West St Paul, Minn.) and
Megan Vandenberg (DePere, Wis.) lost 8-2 at No. 1, and
Haley Jorgensen (Fallon, Nev.) and
Marissa Kinzer (Aitkin, Minn.) fell 8-1 at No. 3.
The Knights were too much in singles, dropping just seven games in sweeping all six matches in straight sets.
The Cardinals (0-1 MIAC, 1-1 overall) take to the road for the first time this season on Feb. 5, traveling to the U of M Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis, Minn., for a 4:30 p.m. conference matchup against St. Thomas.
