WINONA, Minn. — After suffering a 4-0 nonconference setback at the hands of seventh-ranked Lake Forest Friday evening, Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's hockey coach Terry Mannor was hoping for a little different outcome when the two teams squared off again Saturday afternoon.
Unfortunately, what the Saint Mary's head coach got was an instant replay of the previous evening—lots of offense by the Foresters, and none by his Cardinals.
Lake Forest erupted for three goals in the first period and goalie Jacque Rogers stymied the Cardinals for a second straight night, as the Foresters dealt Saint Mary's a 5-0 setback at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena.
"We just couldn't seem to get our offense on track all weekend," said Mannor. "I thought there were spurts where we played very well, we just weren't able to play at that high level on a consistent basis."
Isabel Regine got the Foresters off an running midway through the first period, beating Saint Mary's goalie
Marah Shields (Mitford, Mich.) on a shorthanded breakaway.
Four minutes later, Lake Forest struck again on a goal by Kayla Griffith, and Amy Budde added her 12
th of the season at 15:34 to give the Foresters a commanding 3-0 advantage after the game's opening 20 minutes.
Saint Mary's would remain within three goals after two periods—thanks in large part to Shields, who made 15 second-period saves, while the Cardinals managed just six shots on goal for the second straight period.
Lake Forest would tack on a pair of third period goals—the first by Kate Fanning at 3:24 and the second by Samantha Wais six minutes later—to clinch its fifth straight win, while improving to 12-2-0 overall.
Shields finished with 26 saves, while
Emma Tschida stopped all five Forester shots she faced in 10 minutes of relief action. Rogers, meanwhile, earned her second straight shutout, stopping all 18 Saint Mary's shots.
he Cardinals (4-8-1) are back in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play next weekend. Saint Mary's entertains St. Thomas in a 7 p.m. matchup at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena on Friday, before the two teams head to the St. Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights, Minn., for the 2 p.m. rematch a day later.
