WINONA, Minn. — If
Bailey Wendt (Coon Rapids, Minn.) wanted to make a statement with her performance in the first two games of the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's hockey team's first two games, it's safe to assume the rest of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference heard her loud and clear.
Â
The junior forward—who entered the season having scored five goals in her first two years in a Cardinal uniform—equaled that goal production in her first two games this season, leading Saint Mary's to wins over Marian and St. Norbert.
Â
That performance not only helped the Cardinals open the season 2-0-0 for the second straight year, but also earned Wendt MIAC Athlete of the Week honors, the league office announced Monday.
Â
Wendt kicked off her high-scoring weekend by tallying the Cardinals' first three goals in their 5-3 victory over Marian last Friday. Wendt's first collegiate hat trick also marked the first time since teammate
Jamie Henderson (Madison, Wis.) scored three times against Hamline on Feb. 20, 2017.
Â
And Wendt wasn't finished, continuing to boast the Midas scoring touch against St. Norbert the following day, racking up goals No. 4 and No. 5 on the season.
Â
Wendt and the Cardinals are now off until Nov. 10-11, when they open conference play against St. Thomas. Saint Mary's will travel to St. Thomas Arena in Mendota Heights, Minn., for a 7 p.m. game on Nov. 11, before returning home to the Saint Mary's Ice Arena for the 2 p.m. rematch the following day.
