COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's soccer team entered Friday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Saint John's with its sights set on a third straight victory.
The Johnnies, however, had other ideas.
And SJU made those intentions known early—and often.
Saint John's erupted for three goals in the game's first 11 minutes and never looked back in handing Saint Mary's a 4-1 conference setback at Haws Field.
The Johnnies did not waste any time getting their offense on track, scoring in the game's second minute, as Zack Boerjan beat Cardinal goalkeeper
Nate Levy (Byron, Minn.) with his first goal of the season.
It didn't take long for Boerjan to notch goal No. 2 of the year, scoring again six minutes later to push the Johnnie lead to 2-0. The Johnnies continued their earl game offensive onslaught, netting their third goal of the half—just three minutes after Boerjan's second—this time on a tally by Paul Wadsworth.
Saint Mary's finally broke through in the 60
th minute on a goal by
Charles Reit (Arcadia, Wis.)—his fifth of the season—but that would be as close as the Cardinals would get, as SJU added its fourth goal of the afternoon, this one off the foot of Nathan Stone, to seal the win.
The Cardinals (1-4-0 MIAC, 6-6-0 Overall) are back in action on Sunday, returning home to Ochrymowycz Field for their final nonconference game of the season, a 3 p.m. showdown with UW-Superior.
