WINONA, Minn. — It wasn't quite the outcome Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's hockey coach
Bill Moore was hoping for coming off the Thanksgiving holiday.
Â
The Cardinals, managing just single goals in back-to-back 5-1 losses to Augsburg last weekend, turned their offense up a notch or two against Lake Forest, scoring three times—including two off the stick of
Jared Johnson (Hartland, Wis.).
Â
The Forester offense, however, doubled that output, scoring three times in the second period and adding two more in the third in dealing the Cardinals a 6-3 nonconference setback Friday at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena.
Â
"I didn't think that was one of our better performances," said Moore. "We got the offense going a bit, but overall, we have to play better than that—top to bottom."
Â
Lake Forest open the second with 2:58 remaining in the first period on a goal by Davis DeKorte, but the Cardinals answered right back, as
Dylan Robertson (Alpharetta, Ga.) scored two minutes later to pull Saint Mary's even, 1-1, heading into the first intermission.
Â
The Cardinals opened the second period in the same fashion they ended the first—scoring quickly—as Johnson netted the first of his two goals, tipping a shot by
Jay Heinle (York, Pa.) past Lake Forest goalie Louis-Phillippe De Courcy for a 2-1 Saint Mary's advantage.
Â
From there, however, it was all Lake Forest, as the Foresters rattled off four unanswered goals—three in the second and another 11 minutes into the third to grab a 5-2 lead—before Johnson scored his second of the game, and third of the season, with 2:22 remaining in regulation.
Â
The Foresters would tack on an empty net goal by Cody Guidozi—the sixth different Lake Forest player to score a goal—close out the scoring.
Â
Aaron Davis (Mound, Minn.) finished with 29 saves in goal for the Cardinals—including 10 in both the first and third periods—while De Courcy kicked out 24 of Saint Mary's 27 shots for the Foresters.
Â
The Cardinals (2-6-1 overall) get another shot at Lake Forest on Saturday, hosting the Foresters in a 3 p.m. rematch at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena.
