Cardinals knock off St. Thomas in shootout

Story Links

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. — For the fourth time in as many games, the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's hockey team limited its opponent to just one goal Saturday evening.

And thanks to a late third-period goal, a shootout tally by Jay Heinle (York, Pa.)—and a second-straight 25-save effort from Aaron Davis (Mound, Minn.)—the Cardinals parlayed that one goal allowed into two more Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference points.

Walz scored with less than four minutes remaining in regulation, and Heinle netted the only goal in the three-man shootout, as the Cardinals battled St. Thomas to a 1-1 overtime tie—while earning the extra conference point by scoring the only goal in the shootout.

"It was a good weekend for us," understated Saint Mary's caoch Bill Moore. "I thought we played very well—the nice thing with this team is that they just never panic. It took longer than I would have liked for us to get the game-tying goal, but we'll take it."

Saint Mary's, looking to sweep the Tommies in the regular season for the first time since 1970-71—when the Cardinals beat UST 5-4 and 5-2—found themselves in dire need of same late-game magic, surrendering a late first-period goal and still staring at that one-goal deficit into the third period.

Enter Walz.

The Cardinal senior pulled Saint Mary's even, beating St. Thomas goalie Benjamin Myers at 16:42 for his first goal of the season.

Neither team could come up with the game-winner over the final 3:18 of regulation—or in the five-minute overtime—setting up Heinle's shootout heroics.

Heinle, the second Cardinal shooter, skated in and lifted a shot high over Myers' shoulder to give Saint Mary's the extra conference point.

Davis, who stopped 25 shots in Friday's 4-1 win over the Tommies, equaled that feat on Saturday—while also stopping all three UST shooters in the OT. Myers, meanwhile, finished with 23 saves.

The Cardinals (1-0-1 MIAC, 2-1-1 overall) return home next weekend for a pair of nonconference games at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena. Saint Mary's entertains UW-Stevens Point on Friday at 7 p.m., before hosting UW-Eau Claire in another 7 p.m. contest the following day.
