MIAC Athlete of the Week
WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's hockey team kicked off Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play in impressive fashion—taking five of a possible six points from defending regular-season champion St. Thomas.
Â
Thanks in large part to the play of goalie
Aaron Davis (Mound, Minn.).
Â
And Davis' showings in the two games against the Tommies—a 4-1 victory last Friday and a 1-1 tie and 1-0 shootout win on Saturday—did not go unnoticed, as the Cardinal senior was named the MIAC Men's Hockey Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Â
Davis, who has started all four games in goal for the Cardinals—allowing just one goal in each of those four starts—kicked out 25 of the Tommies' 26 shots in last Friday's 4-1 win at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena.
Â
A day later, Davis put together a mirror-image, repeat performance, again stopping 25 of UST's 26 shots—not to mention all three Tommie attempts in the three-man shootout—in helping the Cardinals to the 1-1 tie/shootout win at the St. Thomas Ice Arena.
Â
Davis, who has stopped 101 of the 105 shots he's faced, owns a microscopic 0.99 goals-against-average and a .962 save percentage head into this weekend's nonconference games against UW-Stevens Point and UW-Eau Claire.
Â
The Cardinals (1-0-1 MIAC, 2-1-1 overall) entertain UW-Stevens Point in a 7 p.m. game at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena on Friday, before hosting UW-Eau Claire in another 7 p.m. contest the following day.
