MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — After posting his fastest time of the season in the 200 IM on Thursday, Saint Mary's University of Minnesota's Joe Tonda (St. Paul, Minn.) doubled the distance in his lone event during Day 2 of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships
And twice the distance meant twice as many races for the Cardinal senior.
Tonda, who shaved three seconds off his previous best time to place 18
th with a time of 2:01.23 in Thursday's 200 IM, finished six seconds faster than his career-best in the preliminaries of the 400 IM Friday, stopping the clock in 4:23.08 to finish eighth overall—and earn a spot in his first conference final, where he posted a time of 4:25.58 to finish eighth overall.
And Tonda wasn't finished, as the senior also earned a spot in the consolation finals in the 100 breaststroke—thanks to a time of 1:01.68 in the morning prelims. Tonda maintained his 14
th-place position in the consolation final, touching the wall in 1:02.00 to place 14
th overall.
Tonda wasn't the only Cardinal getting in a little extra work Friday, as
Grace VanBeest (Flossmoor, Ill.) and
Kizzy Bell (St. Paul, Minn.) each earned spots in the 100 breaststroke consolation final.
VanBeest, who clocked a time of 1:10.20 in placing 13
th in the preliminaries, matched that time in the consolation final to move up one spot to 12th, while Bell—who finished right behind VanBeest in the prelims with her 14
th-place time of 1:11.12—clocked a time of 1:11.13 in the consolation final to maintain her hold on 14th place.
Lucas Gerads (St. Cloud, Minn.) just missed a consolation final in the 100 butterfly, recording a time of 55.67 to place 19th, while Corey Piper (Winona, Minn.) added a season-best 1:02.73 in the 100 butterfly, while Nick Sawchuk (Rochester, Minn.) shaved two seconds off his best time in the 200 freestyle, stopping the clock in 2:03.94.
Tonda, Gerads, and Piper teamed with Brian Mockler (Dubuque, Iowa) to post a time of 1:42.90 in the 200 medley relay, while Tonda, Gerads, and Piper hooked up with Sawchuk to post a time of 7:50.07 in the 800 freestyle relay.
Along with her showing in the 100 breaststroke, VanBeest narrowly missed a spot in the consolation finals in the 400 IM, touching the wall in 5:06.15 to place 18
th. The Cardinal trio of
Zoe Schaetz (Winona, Minn.),
Hannah Emeott (Chisago, City, Minn.) and
Chloe Morrison (Ashkum, Ill.), meanwhile, recorded times of 2:17.08, 2:17.82, and 2:18.98 respectively, in the 200 freestyle.
Kierra Walske (Rochester, Minn.) placed 13
th in the 3-meter diving, finishing with a 285.40 total, and
Shelby Peterson (St. Paul, Min.) was 17
th (243.25).
The Cardinal women's 200 medley relay team of VanBeest, Bell,
Spencer Johnston (Brooklyn Park, Minn.), and Schaetz clocked a time of 2:04.65, while Johnston, Schaetz, Morrison, and Emeott posted a time of 9:16.60 in the 800 freestyle relay.
The third and final day of the three-day event kicks off Saturday morning with prelims at 10:30 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
