WINONA, Minn. — For the second time in as many days, the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's hockey team scored the game's first goal Saturday afternoon in its rematch with St. Catherine.
And, for the second straight day, the Wildcats retaliated by scoring three unanswered goals in dealing Saint Mary's a 3-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena.
"We played a solid game and controlled the play for long stretches," said Saint Mary's coach Terry Mannor. "We played hard right to the end."
Less than 24 hours after Saint Mary's
Jamie Henderson (Madison, Wis.) scored the game's first goal in a 5-3 loss to the SCU,
Lindsay Paschke (New Prague, Minn.) once again gave the Cardinals a 1-0 first-period lead, scoring her third of the season with less than four minutes remaining.
The one-goal advantage lasted nearly seven minutes, before Laken Muller pulled St. Catherine even with a goal at 3:02 of the middle period.
Muller's goal seemed to wake a sleeping giant, as Tori Thompson gave the Wildcats their first lead of the game at 8:47, and Muller added her second of the afternoon three minutes later.
The Cardinals had more than their fair share of chances, but SCU goalie Kristen Pechacek was up to the challenge, making 12 saves in the second period and 13 more in the third in helping to secure the Wildcats' victory.
Marah Shields (Mitford, Mich.)—one of five seniors playing their final collegiate game—finished with 26 saves in goal for the Cardinals.
Saint Mary's closed out the season going 3-12-2 in conference play, while boasting a 6-16-3 overall record.
