APPLETON, Wis. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's tennis team picked up its second win in as many days Monday evening—and the Cardinals had to put in a little extra work to come away with the victory.
Saint Mary's rallied from a 2-1 deficit after the three doubles matches, winning five of the six singles matches—including three, three-setters—to outlast Lawrence 6-3.
"That was a big win for the guys," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "We needed some big performances in the singles matches—and we got just that. Brett (Giesen) played a huge match at No. 2 singles, and Bobby (Tiedeman) and Alex (Zuzek) made big comebacks in their matches.
"Overall, a really excellent win."
Brendan Amiotte (Rapid City, S.D.) and Bobby Tiedeman (Euclid, Minn.) posted the Cardinals' lone doubles win with an 8-2 victory at No. 2, as Saint Mary's entered the six singles matches staring at a 2-1 deficit.
Andrew Johnson (Rochester, Minn.) and
Robbie Sobczak (Cloquet, Minn.) recorded straight-set wins—Johnson's a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4 and Sobczak's a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 6.
Brett Giesen (Cato, Wis.), Tiedeman, and
Alex Zuzek (Hastings, Minn.), meanwhile, found the road to victory a little rockier.
Giesen outlasted LU's Bill Schuman-Kline, 6-4, 3-6, 10-1 at No. 2, while Tiedeman and Zuzek both rallied from one set down to win their matches. Tiedeman posted a 2-6, 7-5, 10-7 victory at No. 3, with Zuzek adding a 1-6, 6-2, 10-7 win at No. 5.
The Cardinals (5-3 overall) are right back in action Tuesday evening, traveling to De Pere, Wis., for a 7:30 p.m. nonconference match against St. Norbert.
