DECORAH, Iowa — Saint Mary's University of Minnesota track and field coach loves bringing his Cardinals back to his alma mater.
And if Saturday's showing in the Luther Invitational is any indication, the Cardinals love competing at Anderson's alma mater.
The Cardinals collected 11 first-place finishes—six on the women's side and five more on the men's—as the two teams both placed third overall.
Becca Dup led the way for the Cardinal women, placing first in both the 55 (7.69) and long jump (5.35 meters), while also joining Maura Michener, Portia Mensah, and Kynzie Smedsrud to place first in the 4x200, stopping the clock in 1:52.71.
Maria Missurelli cleared 3.10 meters to win the pole vault, while Natalie King was first in the weight throw (14.36 meters) and Molly Sweet took home the top spot in the 1,000 (3:17.58).
Madison Gueningsman earned a pair of top-three showings, placing second in 400 (1:06.89) and third in 55 hurdles (10.45), with Smedsrud adding a second in the 55 hurdles (9.56), and Molly Abraham and Bailey Joens chipped in thirds in the 400 (1:07.74) and high jump (1.47 meters), respectively.
Kyle Lichtenegger notched a pair of firsts to lead the way for the Cardinal men, winning the 55 (6.65) and long jump (6.30 meters), while
Ryan Buchmeier chipped in a first in the triple jump (11.33 meters),
Brandon Krogman won the 400 (51.29), and the 4x200 meter relay team of Lichtenegger,
Ross Kinderman,
Andrew Allemann, and
Gordy Paulman posted a winning time of 1:35.30.
Connor Nicholas posted a second-place throw of 12.16 meters in the weight throw, and
Dean Marlin was second in the triple jump (11.83 meters), while the Cardinals also got third-place efforts from
Austin O'Hare (1,000, 2:36.78), and
Tyler Amy (shot put, 11.35 meters).
The Cardinals head to Superior, Wis., next Saturday, competing in the UW-Superior Border Battle.
