Gustavus deals Cardinals 2nd shutout setback

WINONA, Minn. — After surrendering 58 shots in the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's hockey team's 2-0 loss to Gustavus on Friday, the Cardinals limited the high-powered Gusties to just 34 shots in Saturday's rematch.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the Gusties made the most of those 34 shots, doubling their offensive output from the night before in dealing Saint Mary's its second straight shutout loss—this time a 4-0 decision at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena.

The Gusties did not waste any time getting its offense cranked up—and once they did, GAC never took its foot off the gas.

Allie Lewis got the Gusties started, scoring just 28 seconds into the opening period. Six minutes later, GAC pushed its lead to 2-0 as Tegan Rodriguez beat Cardinal goalie Marah Shields (Mitford, Mich.), and Mariana Chapman capped Gustavus' three-goal first period with a tally at 15:21.

Gustavus closed out the scoring late in the second period as Diana Draayer found the back of the net with just 1:24 remaining.

Shields was busy in goal for the Cardinals, finished with 30 saves, while GAC goalie Amanda DiNella collected her second straight shutout in goal for the Gusties, stopping all six Saint Mary's shots.

The Cardinals (2-8-2 MIAC, 5-13-2 Overall) are back on their home ice at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena for a pair of conference games against Saint Benedict next weekend. Saint Mary's hosts CSB at 7 p.m. on Friday and again at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
