MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — For the second time in as many conference matches this season, the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's tennis team squared off against one of the top teams in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Sunday afternoon.
And while the end result was similar to their season-opening 9-0 loss to Carleton on Jan. 28, Cardinal coach
Jeff Halberg saw plenty of positives in Sunday's 9-0 setback to St. Thomas at the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center.
"St. Thomas is a tough, tough team—right through the lineup," Halberg said. "But I was proud of the way the guys battled, and I saw a lot of improvement from our Carleton match."
St. Thomas picked up 8-2, 8-1, and 8-6 wins in the three doubles matches, then completing the sweep with six, straight-set singles victories.
The Cardinals'
Robbie Sobczak (Cloquet, Minn.) dropped a marathon 7-5 opening set in his 7-5, 6-2 loss at No. 6 singles, while
Alex Zuzek (Hastings, Minn.) took his second set at No. 5 singles to a tie-breaker, only to fall 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).
Saint Mary's (0-2 MIAC, 1-2 overall) steps out of conference play on Friday, entertaining North Central (Minn.) in an 11 a.m. match at the Winona Tennis Center.
