WINONA, Minn. — After a nearly two-week "hiatus," the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's tennis team returned to action Friday evening.
Fortunately for coach
Jeff Halberg, the long layoff did not affect his squad, as the Cardinals picked up right where they left off—with yet another sweep.
The Cardinals headed into their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match against Hamline boasting a 4-2 overall record—with all six matches being decided by 9-0 decisions.
And Friday was just more of the same.
The Cardinals jumped out to a convincing 3-0 lead after the doubles matches—winning 8-3, 8-1, and 8-6—before collecting straight-set singles wins in five of the sixth matches to drop Hamline 9-0 at the Winona Tennis Center.
"The ladies played an excellent match tonight," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "Our effort and consistency were spot on."
Laura Sonday (West St. Paul, Minn.),
Megan Vandenberg (De Pere, Wis.),
Julia Boeve (St. James, Minn.),
Haley Jorgensen (Fallon, Nev.), and
Sheyenne Bauer (Cannon Falls, Minn.) dropped just a combined eight games in their five singles matches, while
Cassandra Barr (Eau Claire, Wis.) rebounded from a 6-2 loss in the opening set to win 2-6, 6-4, 10-0 at No. 3 singles to complete the win.
The Cardinals (1-2 MIAC, 5-2 overall) are right back in action on Friday, heading to St. Peter, Minn., for an 11 a.m. conference showdown against nationally ranked Gustavus.
