WINONA, Minn. — For the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's tennis team, the sweeping continues.
The Cardinals played their ninth match of the season Sunday afternoon, and for the ninth straight time, the end result was a 9-0 sweep—as Saint Mary's cruised to a 9-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win over Concordia at the Winona Tennis Center.
"The ladies played really well," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "We came prepared to battled and got the job done."
The Cardinals' sweep streak appeared in jeopardy early, but
Haley Jorgensen (Fallon, Nev.) and
Marissa Kinzer (Aitkin, Minn.) outlasted the Cobbers' Lisa Neumann/Breann Adamek, 9-8 (8-6) at No. 2 doubles.
The doubles teams of
Laura Sonday/
Megan Vandenberg (De Pere, Wis.) and
Cassandra Barr (Eau Claire, Wis.)/
Ashley Syed (Lewisville, Texas) cruised to 8-2 and 8-0 wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, respectively to give Saint Mary's the early 3-0 lead.
The Cardinals dominated the singles portion, winning all six matches in straight sets, including a 6-0, 6-0 win over
Julia Boeve (St. James, Minn.) at No. 3, and a 6-0, 6-1 victory from Barr at No. 3.
Saint Mary's (2-3 MIAC, 6-3 overall) are back in action on Friday, traveling to Lifetime Fitness in White Bear Lake, Minn., for a 6:30 p.m. conference match against Macalester.
