WINONA, Minn. — Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's tennis coach
Jeff Halberg called Wednesday's 8-1 nonconference win over UW-River Falls at the Winona Tennis Center a "team effort."
And the Cardinal head coach wasn't exaggerating.
Laura Sonday (West St. Paul, Minn.) was the only individual to play in both singles and doubles, meaning 11 different Cardinals took part in leading the Cardinals over the visiting Falcons—and on to their fourth straight win.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the three doubles matches, with Sonday and
Ashley Syed (Lewisville, Texas) collecting an 8-1 win at No. 1, while Emily Strezisher and
Paige Swanson added an 8-4 victory at No. 3.
And once the Cardinals got to the singles portion, they were unstoppable, sweeping the six matches—including five in straight sets.
Megan Vandenberg (De Pere, Wis.),
Cassandra Barr (Eau Claire, Wis.),
Julia Boeve (St. James, Minn.),
Haley Jorgensen (Fallon, Nev.), and
Marissa Kinzer (Aitkin, Minn.) collected straight-set victories, while Sonday rallied from a set down to win 4-6, 6-3, 10-3 at No. 1.
The Cardinals (11-5 overall) are now off until next Wednesday, when they host Northwestern in a noon nonconference contest at the Winona Tennis Center.
