ST. PETER, Minn. — For the first two outdoor track and field meets of the season, the jumpers in general—and
Becca Dup in particular—have stolen the show for Saint Mary's University of Minnesota.
Dup was at it again Saturday at Gustavus' Lee Krough Invitational—notching three, third-place finishes—but this time around, the Cardinal sophomore had to step aside and give up the spotlight.
Desmond Steward put together Saint Mary's best performance of the afternoon, winning the triple jump with a leap of 13.36 meters, easily outdistancing runner-up—and teammate—
Dean Marlin's 12.00-meter second-place effort.
And that was just the beginning for Steward, who finished the afternoon with three top-10 finishes, adding a third in the long jump (6.11m) and a sixth in the high jump (1.65m).
Kyle Lichttenegger placed second in the 100—clocking the second-fastest qualifying time (11.13), before holding on to the No. 2 spot in the finals, stopping the clock in 11.15. Lichttenegger also paced four Cardinals finishing in the top six in the long jump, uncorking a leap of 6.38 meters for his second second-place effort of the afternoon. Steward,
Jacob Hagen-Erickson, and Marlin went 3-4-6 in the long jump with leaps of 6.11m, 6.00m, and 5.83m, respectively.
Ross Kinderman recorded a fourth-place throw of 41.71 in the javelin, while
Brandon Krogman breezed to an eighth-place time of 2:20.97 in the 800.
Marlon Barrett-Dwyer finished 11
th in 1,500 (5:01.79),
Tyler Amy chipped in a 13
th in the shot put (10.46m) and an 18
th in the hammer (29.31m),
Connor Nicholas was 15
th in the hammer (38.63m), and Melic Thomas placed 17
th in the 200 (24.09).
Dup was her usual dominating self in pacing the Cardinal women, earning a spot in the finals of 100—posting the third-fastest qualifying time (12.60)—before equaling that time in placing third in the finals. Dup completed her third-place triple by adding thirds in both the long jump (4.63m) and triple jump (11.01m), while
Maria Missurelli added a fourth-place effort in the pole vault, clearing 3.25 meters, while
Rebekah Ramos added a sixth with a vault of 2.81 meters.
Bailey Joens recorded a pair of top-10 finishes, placing fourth in the high jump (1.50m), and adding a seventh in the long jump with a mark of 4.63m.
Danielle Franke raced to a fifth in the 3000 steeplechase (12:49.85), while
Natalie King collected a top-10 showing in the hammer, uncorking a toss of 41.96m.
Alicia Berkenes placed 18
th in 1,500 (5:25.96),
Molly Sweet finished 20
th in the 800 (2:28.94),
Madison Gueningsman was 22
nd in 400 (1:04.17), and
Portia Mensah finished 23

The Cardinals hit the road next Friday, making a return trip to La Crosse, Wis., to take part in the UW-La Crosse Phil Esten Challenge.
