WINONA, Minn. — Talk about coming through in the clutch.
The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota baseball team scored seven runs in the first game of its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against St. Olaf—four of which came with two outs.
After battling the Oles to a 3-3 deadlock through nine innings, St. Olaf scored three runs in the top of the 10
th, only to have the Cardinals answer with four runs in the bottom half of the inning—highlighted by
Justin Weinberg's (Eagan, Minn.) two-out, walk-off RBI single that lifted the Cardinals to a 7-6, 10-inning victory over the Oles at Max Molock Field.
And it was more of the same in the nightcap, as the Cardinals erupted for seven runs in first two innings—all with two outs—including a pair of two-run doubles by
Bob Kinne (St. Paul, Minn.) in cruising to a 9-6 sweep-clinching victory.
The Cardinals made the most of their first at-bat in the opener, as
Ben Buerkle (Roseville, Minn.) drew a one-out walk, and scored on a two-out double to right-center by
Zach Slowiak (Chippewa Falls, Wis.) to give Saint Mary's a quick 1-0 lead.
The Oles collected a run-scoring, two-out hit of their own off the bat of Ben Arndt in the second to knot the game at 1-1, only to have Saint Mary's answer in the bottom of the frame—again with two outs.
After setting down the first two Cardinals, St. Olaf pitcher Jake Mathison gave up back-to-back-to back two-out singles by Weinberg,
Joey Costello (Victoria, Minn.), and
Joe Seegers (Oconomowoc, Wis.) to give Saint Mary's the lead again, 2-1.
The Cardinals didn't wait until their were two outs to pad their lead to 3-1 in the fourth, getting singles by
Jake Barry (Tinley Park, Ill.) and
Justin Weinberg (Eagan, Minn.), with Barry scoring when Weinberg intentionally got into a rundown between first and second.
St. Olaf pulled even at 3-3 in the sixth, leading off the inning with three straight singles—including an RBI base hit by Luke Dahl—before plating their second run of the inning on a two-out, bases-loaded walk to Thomas Peterson.
The Oles threatened in the top of the eighth, loading the bases with one out, but Cardinal third baseman Will Mathews (Geneva, Ill.) turned an acrobatic third-to-first double play to end the threat and keep the game deadlocked.
St. Olaf broke the stalemate in the top of the 10
th, scoring once on a Cardinal throwing error, before adding RBI singles from Travis McDonald and Dylan Blake to take its first lead of the game, 6-3.
In the Cardinals' 10
th, Buerkle welcomed Ole reliever Will Gustafson with a lead-off double to right, and Mathews followed with a single to left to put runners on first and third with no one out. Pinch-hitter
Bailey Melz (Excelsior, Minn.) lifted a sacrifice fly to deep center to score Buerkle, and
Bob Kinne (St. Paul, Minn.) launched his first home run of the season—a two-run bomb to left—to knot the game at 6-6.
After a Barry fly out,
Chris Bartosz (Woodridge, Ill.) laced a two-out double to left-center, chasing Gustafson, and Weinberg followed with the Cardinals' last—and most important—two-out hit of the afternoon, a laser to left field that scored pinch-runner Matt Piechowski (Hutchinson, Minn.) with the game-winning run.
All nine Cardinal starters had at least one hit in Saint Mary's 14-hit Game 1 attack, led by Slowiak and Weinberg with three hits each. Buerkle chipped in a two runs in three at-bats with a pair of walks and two stolen bases.
It was St. Olaf that jumped out to the quick lead in the nightcap, taking advantage of two hits and a Cardinal error to plate a pair of first-inning runs.
The Cardinals continued their two-out hit parade in their half of the inning, getting a two-out, two-run double from Kinne, and, after an Ole throwing error plated the third run of the inning, Bartosz and Weinberg delivered—you guessed it—back-to-back two-out doubles to push the Saint Mary's lead to 5-2.
Kinne tacked on his second two-out, two-run double in the second inning to push the Cardinal advantage to 7-2, and, after three straight scoreless innings, the Cardinals' offense went back to work in the sixth.
Bartosz led off the inning with a single, took second on a balk, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a Weinberg RBI double. Costello advanced Weinberg to third with a sacrifice bunt, and, after a Seegers line-out to second, the freshman scored on a wild pitch to make it a 9-2 Cardinal lead.
Ryan Iverson led off the seventh with a solo home run to chase Cardinal starter
Jesse Barron (Minnetonka, Minn.)—who went six innings, allowing three runs on six hits in earning his second win of the season.
Kinne, Bartosz, and Weinberg accounted for six of the Cardinals' seven hits in the nightcap—each finishing with two hits—while Buerkle added the other Saint Mary's hit.
The Cardinals (3-5 MIAC, 13-14 overall) hit the road on Wednesday, traveling to Parade Stadium in Minneapolis, Minn., for a 2:30 p.m. conference doubleheader against Augsburg.
