Cardinals drop pair to 17th-ranked Tommies

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota fastpitch softball team erupted for seven hits—one more than host St. Thomas—in Game 1 of the teams' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader.

Unfortunately for Saint Mary's, it was quality over quantity, as the Tommies parlayed their six Game 1 hits into three runs, while the Cardinals had no runs to show for their seven opening-game hits in falling to 17th-ranked St. Thomas 3-0.

The Cardinal bats weren't nearly as active in the nightcap, as St. Thomas pitcher Sammy Hogan limited Saint Mary's to just four hits, as the Tommies completed the sweep with a 6-0 victory over Saint Mary's.

St. Thomas scored all three of its runs in its first two at-bats, tagging Cardinal starter Ashley Betzold (Farmington, Minn.) for one run in the first and two more in the second. Megan Bush drove in UST's first run with a first-inning single, while the Tommies scored both of their second-inning runs on a pair of wild pitches.

Betzold recorded her 13th complete game of the season, holding the high-powered Tommies to just the three runs on six hits, while walking three and striking out two. Allie Borawski (Stickney, Ill.) paced the Cardinals' seven-hit offensive attack in Game 1, going 2-for-3, with Betzold Brittney Birkhauser (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.), Jordyn Keprios (Farmington, Minn.), Mia Lloyd (Minneapolis, Minn.), and Alexa Diteman (Burnsville, Minn.) accounting for Saint Mary's other five hits.

St. Thomas scored in four of the six innings it batted—scoring three times in the second, and once in third, fourth and sixth—en route to its third straight win and 14th in the Tommies' last 15 games.

Betzold collected two of Saint Mary's four Game 2 hits, going 2-for-3, with Kathi Opsahl (Elk River, Minn.) and Borawski picking up the other two.

The Cardinals (1-6 MIAC, 7-16 overall) are right back in action on Sunday, hosting St. Olaf in a 1 p.m. conference doubleheader at Saint Mary's Field.
